The Basics

Badminton is a popular racket sport in which opponents try to win points by hitting a shuttlecock over the net and onto the floor of their opponents half of the court. While many people see badminton as a back yard sport, it is actually a very physical game requiring strength, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, fast reflexes and good co-ordination. It is the fastest racket sport in the world with shuttles reaching speeds of over 200 mph.

There are five disciplines in badminton:

Mens Singles

Ladies Singles

Mens Doubles

Ladies Doubles

Mixed Doubles

Playing singles requires great fitness, deception and precision. It is a game of patience, trying to out maneuver your opponent in order to set yourself up with a wining shot opportunity. Doubles, in particular mens doubles, is a dynamic fast paced exciting spectacle. It involves two players on each side each trying to dominate through aggressive attacking play. The players must work as a team in order to set each other up for the wining shot. Please see the video below for an example of great doubles play

MIXED DOUBLES

More about Mixed Doubles

More

Mixed doubles involves a team with both a male and female player. It is the most tactically difficult of the five disciplines. The ideal is that the man will be at the back smashing and the lady using her finesse at the net to set up the smash and intercepting any weak replies. At higher levels of play, often you will see mixed doubles played almost as a hybrid between level doubles and mixed.
